A 38-year-old former user of Accutane® (isotretinoin) who said the potent acne medication caused his inflammatory bowel disease was awarded $25.6 million in damages Feb. 16, 2010, by a New Jersey jury. The patient told the jury he took the drug in 1995 and has had five surgeries since. One operation was done to remove his colon. The nine jurors came to a unanimous decision after deliberating three and a half hours.

To date, according to reports, Accutane® users have received $56 million in awards from the drug's maker Roche. This most recent $25.16 million has been the largest verdict against the company. One verdict for $7.2 million was overturned by a Florida appeals court.
