Accutane® Injuries
Millions of people have used Accutane® (isotretinoin) to treat severe acne. Unfortunately, however, the medication is so potent, it has been linked to some serious Accutane injuries. The drug is no loner available for sale in the U.S. under the brand name, Accutane®, however, some people may still be suffering from the long-term Accutane® side effects or injuries developed as a result of using it.
Injuries from Accutane® may include the following:
Lupus
Lupus is an autoimmune disease that can affect the entire body, and cause damage to vital organs including the kidneys, lungs, brain and nervous system or the arteries. There have been some reports among Accutane® users of Lupus-like symptoms such as hair loss, sunlight sensitivity, stroke, inflamed blood vessels and chronic fatigue.
Autoimmune Disorder
Autoimmune disorder refers to a condition in which a person's immune system attacks its own healthy tissue. There are approximately 80 different types of autoimmune disorders.
Ischemic Bowel Disease (Ischemic Colitis)
Ischemic bowel disease affects the intestines and is caused by a lack of blood supply. Symptoms include severe abdominal cramping and pain, bloody stools, diarrhea, vomiting and nausea.
Ulcerative Colitis
Ulcerative colitis is a form of inflammatory bowel disease that results in ulcers (open wounds) and inflammation in the rectal lining and colon. Symptoms include chronic fatigue, anemia, weight loss, lost appetite, rectal bleeding and pain in the joints.
Crohn's Disease
Crohn's Disease is another form of inflammatory bowel disease that affects the digestive tract (gastrointestinal tract). Symptoms include pain in the stomach, diarrhea, weight loss, fever and anemia.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) include abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea and constipation and mucous in the stool. There has not been a proven link between Acctune® use and IBS.
Birth Defects
Accutane® is known to cause severe birth defects when a women uses the medication while pregnant. In fact, female patients who used the medication when it was still on the market had to sign a statement agreeing to use two forms of birth control while using it.
Severe Violence
Some people reported to have experienced an increase in depression and violent behavior while using Accutane®. The link has not been scientifically proven, however, patients with a history of depression or other mental illness may be at an increased risk of aggressive and violent behavior from Accutane®.
Attempted Suicide
Severe depression that leads to thoughts of suicide may be a side effect of Accutane® among users who already have a history of depression.
