Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Many patients who have taken Accutane® (isotretinoin) have reported to have developed a condition known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) required the manufacturer of Accutane® to include a warning on its label regarding the link between the acne medication and inflammatory bowel disease.

What is Inflammatory Bowel Disease?

Inflammatory bowel disease is a term used to describe a group of disorders in which the intestines are inflamed. Inflammation of the intestines can last long periods of time and will usually occur over and over in persons who develop the disorder. The two types of inflammatory bowel disease include Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Note: Inflammatory bowel disease is not irritable bowel syndrome.

Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis

Patients who suffer Crohn’s Disease typically develop open sores (ulcers) in the small and large intestines, and those who suffer from ulcerative colitis usually experience ulcers in the rectum and lower portion of the large intestine. Symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease are extremely uncomfortable and may include a combination of any of the following:

  • Pain in the abdomen
  • Stomach cramping
  • Mild to severe diarrhea
  • Dehydration
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Blood or mucous in the stool
  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Weight loss

Some patients may experience inflammation or swelling in other parts of the body as well, including the joints, eyes, skin and liver.

Treating Inflammatory Bowel Disease

The most common treatment method for IBD is medications, including anti-inflammatory drugs and immunosuppressive agents. Your doctor will most likely try these medications first. If your body does not respond to the medications, he or she may suggest surgery. This will depend on the severity of your condition.
