Treatments for Crohn's Disease
Crohn's Disease treatment for patients will vary depending on the severity of the Crohn's disease symptoms. Treatment options mainly involve controlling symptoms and keeping the disease in remission. There are a variety of drugs used to control the inflammation, with the stronger medicines only used as treatment options in severe cases.
Drugs used for treating Crohn's Disease include:
- Aminosalicylates can be used to reduce symptoms and may also reduce the risk of colon cancer in Crohn's Disease patients
- Antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin can help treat fistulas and work especially well when the colon is the affected area
- Corticosteroids are used to control inflammation when other drugs are not working (corticosteroids can have serious side effects)
If the patient develops nutrient deficiencies a feeding tube may have to be inserted into the nose. Other patients may require an IV for food in order to rest the bowels. For some patients, surgery will be required. Surgery usually involves removing portions of the intestines. It is required when the symptoms include bowel obstruction, holes in the intestine, cancer or severe blood loss.
