Accutane® and Crohn’s Disease
People who have taken Accutane® (isotretinoin), a potent anti-acne medication, may have an increased risk of getting Crohn's disease. While a definitive cause and effect have not been scientifically established, research has indicated a link between taking Accutane® and Crohn's disease.
Crohn's disease is a form of inflammatory bowel disease that leads to inflammation of the digestive tract, severe diarrhea and sometimes malnutrition and osteoporosis. There is no cure for Crohn's disease, but certain treatments can lessen its effects and produce remission for long periods of time.
Patients with Crohn's disease typically have:
- Diarrhea, which is the most common symptom of the disease
- Blood in the stool
- Lack of appetite and loss of weight
- Pain and cramping in the abdomen
- Ulcers
- Skin problems
- Fever
- Arthritis
- Delayed growth (in children)
- Fatigue
- Inflammation of the eyes
It once was thought that anxiety and diet caused Crohn's disease. However, today researchers are focused more on an abnormal inflammatory response of the body's immune system to bacteria in the intestines. Studies are also being conducted on finding a hereditary link to the disease.
Patients who are at greater risk of developing Crohn's disease often are:
- In their twenties
- Lack appetite and are losing weight
- White
- Of Ashkenazi Jewish descent
- In a family where some other member has the disease
- Cigarette smokers
- Residents of a city or place where there is more industry
- People who eat a high fat diet or processed foods
- People who have used Accutane® (although a positive cause and effect has not been established some kind of link has shown up)
Complications of Crohn's disease can include:
- Colon cancer (especially if the disease has been present for eight years or more)
- A blockage in the bowel
- Osteoporosis
- Anal fissures
- Ulcers
- Malnutrition
- Kidney stones
- Gallstones
- Inflammation of the skin or eyes
