Why was Accutane® Pulled from the U.S. Market?

Roche Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Accutane®, pulled the drug off the market without admitting it was due to the mounting evidence of serious injuries due to use of the drug. Instead it cited increased sales of generic versions of the drug making it financially unfeasible. However, there have been thousands of Accutane® lawsuits filed against this drug company.

What are the Side Effects of Accutane®?

Minor side effects experienced by most Accutane® users include:

  • Dry skin which tends to flake or peel
  • Lips tend to become chapped easily
  • Dry eyes
  • Dry inner noses

Accutane® is very harsh and can caused severe birth defects in children who are exposed to the drug by their pregnant mothers. Women who became pregnant while using Accutane® are also at a higher risk of miscarriages.

The birth defect risk has been known for some time. Because of this, women taking Accutane® are required to use two different birth control methods while taking Accutane® to prevent harm should they become pregnant.

Other known side effects are mood disorders including depression and suicidal thoughts.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Accutane® side effects also include several gastrointestinal disorders, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). IBD refers to two very similar but separate medical conditions. One is Crohn's Disease, which can occur throughout the digestive tract, but is most commonly found in the lower part of the small intestine. Crohn's disease causes a swelling or thickening of the intestinal wall.

The other is Ulcerative Colitis, which occurs in the large intestine. It also involves swelling and the formation of ulcers on the inner lining of the large intestine. While the two forms of inflammatory bowel disease are different, and need different treatments, they share many of the same symptoms, including:

  • Fever
  • Abdominal Pain and cramping
  • Weight loss
  • Rectal Bleeding
  • Blood or mucus in the stool
  • Persistent and severe diarrhea
  • Vomiting
